Nutritional supplementation for fertility
Dietary supplements can be a useful addition for both men and women who are trying to conceive, as they can help ensure the necessary nutrients that are crucial for fertility and a healthy pregnancy. Here are some recommended supplements for both women and men:
For women
1. Folic acid:
- Why: Folic acid is important for both fertility and early fetal development.
- Recommended amount: Take 400 micrograms of folic acid from the moment you want to become pregnant and continue doing so for the first 10 weeks of your pregnancy.
- Folic acid reduces the chance of spina bifida in your baby and possibly also the chance of a cleft lip, jaw and/or palate (cleft lip). The amount of folic acid that you get through food is usually not enough.
2. Vitamin D:
- Why: Supports bone health and immune system function.
- Recommended amount: 15-20 mg per day, sometimes a higher dose may be necessary based on the vitamin D level in the blood.
- You can also start taking vitamin D from the moment you want to become pregnant. You can use it throughout your pregnancy. Vitamin D is important for the proper bone development of the unborn baby. In addition, there are indications that vitamin D supplementation reduces the risk of gestational diabetes and a child with a low birth weight. It may also reduce the risk of a child developing asthma-like symptoms later in life.
3. Iron
- Why: Prevents anemia and supports the development of the placenta and fetus.
- Recommended amount: 27 mg per day.
- Iron is also very important for your fertility, so make sure you regularly eat iron-rich foods, such as (organic) meat, dried fruits and green leafy vegetables.
4. Omega-3 Fatty Acids
- Why: Supports the development of the baby's brain and eyes and can extend the duration of pregnancy.
- Recommended amount: 200-300 mg DHA per day.
5. Iodine
- Why: Essential for the production of thyroid hormones, which are crucial for the baby's development.
- Recommended amount: 150 mg per day.
For men
1. Zinc:
- Why: Improves sperm quality and mobility.
- Recommended amount: 11 mg per day.
2. Selenium:
- Why: Supports sperm health and increases fertility.
- Recommended amount: 55 mg per day.
3. Vitamin C:
- Why: Improves sperm quality and protects sperm from free radical damage.
- Recommended amount: 90 mg per day.
4. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)
- Why: Improves sperm quality and mobility.
- Recommended amount: 100-200 mg per day.
5. Omega-3 Fatty Acids
- Why: Support overall health and improve sperm quality.
- Recommended amount: 200-300 mg DHA per day.
Additional considerations
Multivitamins
Both partners can benefit from a daily multivitamin supplement to help fill in any deficiencies. Always consult a doctor first to get a clearer picture of your specific vitamin deficiencies after testing.
Healthy food
Supplementation should go hand in hand with a healthy, balanced diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, proteins, and healthy fats.
Medical advice
Always consult a doctor or specialized health professional before starting any supplements, especially if you have certain medical conditions or are taking other medications.
Good preparation and attention to nutrients can have a positive effect on the fertility and health of both the mother, the father and the future baby.
